Message

Self introduction

I came to Japan in 1987, and spent for 10 years for studying virology in Tokyo. Then I moved to Obihiro in 1997, and changed the research direction to protozoan diseases, especially focused on tick-borne protozoan diseases.

Introduction

Babesia is intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite causes severe anemic disease both in humans and animals. The parasite is mostly transmitted by ticks, but sometimes also can be trasmitted by blood transfusion and during fightings. Our lab is mainly focusing on canine babesiosis caused by Babesia gibsoni which is endemic widely in Japan. Currently we have established whole genome database, and we are trying to develop effective control (diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive) measures against canine babesiosis based on the genome database.

List of current research topics

  • Analysis of the host protective imunity against babesiosis
  • Analysis of the mechanism of lytic anemia
  • Development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive measures against babesiosis
  • Analysis of the lifecycle of Babesia in ticks and development of transmission blocking vaccines
  • Molecular epidemiology of tick-borne prtozoan diseases
