“Food” is essential for human life and world peace. Therefore, the issues surrounding food (food safety, livestock diseases, and food shortages) are the most important international problems that need to be addressed. The Research Center for Global Agromedicine (GAMRC) was established in April 2015 in order to solve these global issues by strengthening international joint research between Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and the world’s leading universities in the fields of agriculture and veterinary medicine. The GAMRC aims to collaborate with universities in developing countries to promote the study of these fields. The term “global Agromedicine” was coined to describe the vision of the research center, which is “to protect people, livestock, crops and wildlife by promoting research that will find solutions to these pressing food-related problems around the world”.

The beginning of GAMRC was the academic cooperative agreements Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine established with Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA. These agreements promote international collaborative research in the fields of veterinary medicine and agriculture mainly by facilitating faculty exchanges. Consequently, the GAMRC incorporates the advanced aspects of the educational programs from these universities into the curriculum of Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. The result from this collaborative research will be published jointly in international journals by the investigators, and will also be presented at international symposia dealing with global food issues.
