OUAVM held a live Zoom lecture by Dr. John Pool, associate professor of the department of genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, on November 19, 2021. The online lecture, entitled “Population Genomics and the Genetic Basis of Adaptive Evolution”, drew 38 attendees, including students and faculty members.
Dr. Pool’s research is the natural selection of populations at the genetic level. In this special lecture, he explained the analysis methods and findings in research on population genomics that uses Drosophila melanogaster, a fly species that is extensively used as a model organism in genetics.
He also shared the significance and joy of unraveling the genetic basis of adaptive evolution in organisms.
His lecture, which stimulated the motivation of the graduate students and faculty members in pursuing their studies, was followed by an engaging discussion. Dr. Pool promised to visit OUAVM when the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
