A sake brewery called “Hekiungura” has been completed on Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine premises on May 28, 2020.
This sake brewery was built on land loaned based on an agreement that was concluded between Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Kamikawa Taisetsu Sake Brewery Co. and Tokachi Ryokkyu Co. in July 2019. The land covers an area of approximately 3,700 square meters, and besides the sake brewery, there is a seminar building that can also be used for university lectures.
The above-mentioned agreement is a new kind of industry-academia collaboration initiative. It is intended to stimulate education and research – including joint research – into yeasts and fermentation, including the practical application of education on fermentation and brewing as important elements of “food” on an actual manufacturing scale. The agreement is also expected to promote industrial development in the Tokachi region and boost the economy and industries in Hokkaido.
This year, lectures will be delivered by the chief brewer at Kamikawa Taisetsu Sake Brewery, tours of the brewery will be conducted and internships will be provided. The details of this agreement, including future lectures in the attached seminar building, practical training in the brewery, joint research, co-authoring of articles, and so forth will also be discussed to enhance education and research continually.
