On Thursday, October 16, 2025, a seminar lecture entitled “Agricultural Intensification and Zoonoses Emergence: Utilizing One Health Framework in Agricultural Landscapes” was delivered by Professor VACHEL GAY V. PALLER from the Institute of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños.
The unprecedented rate of emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases poses a serious challenge to global public health and economic stability. At the same time, undernutrition continues to contribute significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Addressing these dual challenges—the response to emerging infectious diseases and the growing demand for sustainable food systems—represents one of the most critical priorities of the 21st century.
Professor Paller discussed findings from the IHoPE Laboratory (Interaction of Host, Parasite, and Environment Laboratory) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, including the ZOOTRIP Project (Zoonotic Transmission of Intestinal Parasites) and the FRESH FARMS Program (Food Risk and Safety Analysis in Agricultural Farms towards Improvement of Control Strategies for Food Safety). She emphasized the importance of the “One Health” approach, which highlights the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
