Seminar on Drug Discovery Project

NewsReport

We held special seminar for NRCPD drug discovery project on March 7 (Fri) at PK hall. We invited two prominent researchers, Prof. Yasushi KAWAGUCHI, the University of Tokyo, and Dr. Ken MAEDA, National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, Prof. Xuenan XUAN from NRCPD talked his 28-Year Research Journey.

Our National Research Center for Protozoan Diseases (NRCPD) has initiated a research project of Drug Discovery against protozoan parasites in livestock. Because protozoan diseases in livestock are causing significant economic losses to the global livestock industry, the establishment of countermeasures has always been required. However, protozoan disease and vector control will be difficult because of its complex life cycle. Until now, NRCPD has established in vitro screening model, animal model using experimental mice and natural hosts for several parasites. These systems will be powerful tools for our Drug Discovery project. This research project aims at establishment of “Center of Excellence for Drug Discovery Research on Protozoan Diseases in Livestock”. This symposium provided us important information on the forefront of drug discovery research for parasitic diseases. In addition, Professor XUAN gave an important message as his final lecture (see photo).
