Since 2013, Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (OUAVM) has had an ongoing research project on “calcium fertilization for potato production” in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) and Calbee Potato Inc. This project has shown the importance of calcium fertilization for achieving high yields and quality potatoes for potato chip processing.

This year, we conducted field trials to establish the right fertilizer management regime for calcium and magnesium in the Tokachi and Kamikawa districts of Hokkaido, as well as the northern Kanto region near Tokyo. In July 2017, we were fortunate to have Professor Jiwan Palta of UW-Madison Department of Horticulture visit Japan. While he was here he visited the trial fields and conducted soil and plant matter sampling together with the faculty and students. During his stay, he also had active discussions with faculty members and students of our food science, plant physiology, and plant pathology laboratories.

In the near future, we hope to organize a seminar inviting local growers and related professionals to share the results from our ongoing trials.
