Dr. Aurelie Rakotondrafara from the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Visits OUAVM

We invited Dr. Aurelie Rakotondrafara from the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, to conduct a joint research on plant viruses of potatoes.

Since 2016, we have been collaborating with Dr. Rakotondrafara of the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, to develop a method to detect plant virus on potatoes and reduce the transmission of viruses to potatoes through aphids. Our target is to optimize the isothermal gene amplification method of the plant virus, which has been established by Dr. Rakotondrafara during her stay, and apply it as a feasible technology in the field. We are also working on restraining the viral transmission by suppressing the behaviors of aphids, responsible for transmitting the potato plant virus.

The trial has also been expanded as an interdisciplinary joint research of plant pathology and applied entomology. Furthermore, during her stay in the university, the doctor held a special lecture for 3rd year undergraduate students and 1st year postgraduate students, where participants experienced a realAmerican-style lecture fully exploiting applying approaches the active learning.
