子供の頃から犬が好きで、畜大入学時は動物を研究したいと思っていました。
でも、森で出会ったオオバナノエンレイソウの美しさに、「この花の名前を知りたい！」「ずっと見続けたい！」と思い、植物の研究にのめり込みました。
学生の皆さんにも、「これをやりたい！」と思えるテーマに出会ってもらいたいと思います。

一度自然が失われた都市域などで再生される森林の生態と、その生態にもとづき、人がどのような方法で森林を育てていけば良いかを研究しています。研究を始めたきっかけは、畜大の学生時代に、100年の計画でふるさとの森をつくる取り組みがおこなわれている都市公園「帯広の森」に感銘を受け、自分も携わってみたいと思ったからです。帯広の森の森づくり活動は、多くの市民の参加により続けられています。
環境保全機能などの役割を担う目的で、都市域に樹木などを植栽して再生される森林は、林床植生に外来種が多く入り込むなど、自然の森林とは生態が異なります。樹木の生育を長期間にわたり、継続調査することは困難なため、都市域に再生される森林の形成過程や更新過程などは不明なところが多くあります。研究では、主に北海道の寒冷地に成立する広葉樹林、針葉樹林を対象としています。森林での現地調査では、植生調査をおこない、どんな木本植物や草本植物が生育しているか種類を調べ、その植物がどのような状態で生育しているのか被度などを測定します（写真1）。また、現地の植物がどのような環境で生育しているのか、光環境なども調べます（写真2）。現地の調査から、森林の状態を分析します。また、都市域に再生される森林の多くは、人の手により育てていく育成管理や、状態を維持するための維持管理などがおこなわれています。再生される森林の育成や維持を、人の手によってどのように促進できるのか、森林の状態をもとにアイデアなど出したり、議論をおこなうことで検討しています（写真3）。さらに、少なくとも100年と言われる森林の育成に関わり続ける人をどのようにつないでいくかを検討することも大切な課題です。長期的な森づくりに向けて、森に関わる人との連携性・継続性を高める森づくり体制の構築などを、森づくりの担い手の育成や子供達への環境教育の面からも考えていきたいと思っています。

I have liked dogs since I was a child, and when I entered Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, I wanted to study animals. However, when I saw the beauty of a Trillium camschatcense in forest, I thought "I want to know the name of this flower!”, “I want to keep looking at it!” and I became absorbed in the study of plants. So, I hope that students will also find a theme, "This is what I want to do!”. Born in Niigata Prefecture. My hobby is music.

My research focuses on the ecology of artificial urban forests where nature has been lost, and how people can help these forests based on the ecology. I started my research when I was a student at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. I was impressed by the "Obihiro no Mori", an urban park with a 100-year plan to create a hometown forest, and I wanted to be involved in the project. The forestation activities of Obihiro no Mori are being carried out with the participation of many citizens.
Forests that are restored by planting trees in urban areas for the purpose of environmental preservation have a different ecology from natural forests, for example non-native species invade to the forest floor vegetation. Because it is difficult to continuously survey the growth of trees over a long period of time, there are many questions the establishment processes of forests restored in urban areas. In my research, I mainly focus on broad-leaved forests and coniferous forests in the cold regions of Hokkaido. About field surveys, I conduct vegetation surveys to record the species of woody and herbaceous plants growing in the forests, and to measure the coverage and other characteristics of the plants (Photo 1). I also investigate such as light condition. (Photo 2). Based on the field survey, I analyze the condition of the forest. In addition, most forests restored in urban areas are managed to grow and maintain their environment. I am considering how people can promote the growth and maintenance of the forests, by throwing ideas and holding discussions based on the condition of the forests (Photo 3). Another important issue is how to connect people who will continue to be involved in the forest restoration for at least 100 years. I consider the establishment of a forest development system that enhances cooperation and continuity between people involved in the forest for the long-term, from the perspective of training foresters and environmental education for children.
