- Developing a new biomarker and vaccine treatment for malignant melanoma in dogs
I've focused my attention on DC-HIL (a membrane protein that's involved in immune tolerance) and confirmed that it's expressed in canine malignant melanomas. I've also confirmed that certain anti-cancer effects can be achieved by combining a tumor-associated peptide vaccine for malignant melanoma and an anti-DC-HIL antibody. Further research is under way for the development of a new treatment and biomarker.
- Genetically examining a family of French bulldogs that were suspected of having familial mast cell tumors
Mast cell tumors were found in a family of French bulldogs that was brought to the hospital. By conducting DNA microarray analysis for dogs with mast cell tumor (control group) that are genetically totally different from the family, I found 13 candidate genes that characterize the case group. Further examinations are under way to identify causative genes.
- Examining Labrador retrievers that presented the “swimmer puppy” syndrome
A disease has been reported in which puppies have difficulty standing up and instead paddle their limbs as if swimming. I've conducted genetic, nutritional, and clinical examinations based on data of Labrador retrievers owned by Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and on data provided by the Hokkaido Association of Guide Dogs for the Blind to find causes and analyze pathological conditions.

I was born in Nakano City, Tokyo. I started working for Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in 2009. I make constant efforts while asking myself how I can bring students to enjoy learning the practical science of veterinary medicine, how I can provide the best treatment for patients and animal owners, and what I can do to achieve it.
