Ms. Anoma Gunarathne, research student of the Hygiene Economics program of the Laboratory of Food Safety (Instructor: Hiroichi Kono, associate professor) has been chosen as a scholarship recipient of the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation. She will study as a post-doctoral researcher for two years at the University of Gottingen in Germany.

At the “2015 Symposium of Dairy Science - Aiming for a Breakthrough in the 21st Century Milk Science -” held in Tokachi Plaza (Obihiro, Hokkaido), a special lecture was performed by a pediatrician regarding breast-feeding. Other lectures were also given on themes such as oligosaccharide metabolism of human milk by bifidobacteria, prevention from infection by pathogenic microorganism with probiotics lactic acid bacteria, immunostimulating effects of polysaccharides produced by lactic acid bacteria, and treatment of atopic dermatitis with probiotics lactic acid bacteria. In addition, students from the Milk and Meat Hygiene program of the Laboratory of Food Safety (Instructor: Tadasu Urashima, professor) made a poster presentation.

Professor Tadasu Urashima et al at the Milk and Meat Hygiene program of the Laboratory of Food Safety have been given the Most Cited Review Award (an award granted to the review paper that has been cited most frequently) for the year of 2015 for their review contributed to the “Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry” published by the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry.

Ms. Fumie Magata, a doctoral student at the Animal Production Hygiene program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health (Instructor: Takashi Shimizu, associate professor), has been awarded the 2014 Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Ikushi Prize.

Ms. R. T. Navalona, a doctoral student at the Hygiene Economics program of the Laboratory of Food Safety (Instructor: Hiroichi Kono, associate professor), has been chosen as a recipient of the Scholarship Recipient for International Students of the HEIWA NAKAJIMA FOUNDATION.

Mr. Nobuyuki Kusaba, an adult doctoral student at the Animal Production Hygiene program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health (Instructor: Katsuya Kida, professor), has been granted the 2014 Excellent Article Award of the year of 2014 for his article contributed to the Journal of Livestock Medicine issued by the National Agricultural Insurance Association

Professors Haruko Ogawa and Kunitoshi Imai at the Pathogenic Microorganism program of the Laboratory of Food Safety have managed to register two patents that have been acquired through collaborative research with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (Japan). The patents are titled as follows: “Virus capable of expressing an α-galactose epitope, and method for production of vaccine” and “Transgenic bird capable of expressing α-galactose epitope, virus and vaccine”.

On February 18, Obihiro University became the site of location shooting for a special documentary program “Breakthrough in Life” to be aired in June 2015 on NHK. Dr. Oftedal from the Smithsonian Institute of Environmental Studies (United States) came to our university to appear in the program, and held talks with Professor Tadasu Urashima at the Milk and Meat Hygiene program of Laboratory of Food Safety.

Associate Professor Akira Kubota at the Pathogenic Microorganism Program of the Laboratory of Food Safety won the Excellent Poster Award at the “17th Research Presentation of the Japan Society of Endocrine Disruptors Research”.

The 22nd Molecular Parasitology Workshop and the 12th Molecular Parasitology/Malaria Research Forum (64 participants) were convened at our university, with Associate Professor Yoshifumi Nishikawa at the Sanitary Zoology Program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health acting as the organizer. Under the stance of “Everyone is equal in the Field of Science”, in-depth findings were shared among the participants engaging in vibrant and constructive discussions.

The 9th International Ruminant Reproduction Symposium (200 participants from 30 countries) was held in the city of Obihiro, as the first to take place in a non-English speaking region, under the chairmanship of Akio Miyamoto at the Animal Production Hygiene Program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health. At the symposium, participants took part in active presentations and vigorous discussions.

The 107th Meeting of the Society for Reproduction and Development (400 participants) was convened at our university under the chairmanship of Professor Akio Miyamoto at the Animal Production Hygiene Program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health. The participants included many faculty staff and students from our graduate school and took place in active presentations and discussions.

The research group led by Associate Professor Yoshifumi Nishikawa at the Sanitary Zoology Program of the Laboratory of Animal and Environmental Health has developed a new vaccine for malaria and toxoplasmosis, protozoan infections for which no effective vaccine has been established. They then confirmed the effectiveness of the vaccine with experimental model mice.

Dr. Takahito Toyotome and his colleagues contributed an article titled “Glucoamylase is a major allergen of Schizophyllum commune” to the journal “Clinical and Experimental Allergy”. This article was chosen as the “Editor’s Choice” of that edition, and was explained in the journal’s editorial page.
