自己紹介と学生へのメッセージ みんなさん、こんにちは!
I have a master’s degree in science from the University of Wisconsin (USA), where I studied Campylobacter from lake water, mud, and many ducks to look at possible ways that this bacterium could be caught by humans. After graduate school, I worked in the research laboratories of the University of Minnesota Medical School, where I learned many techniques to study diseases. I also have 15 years of experience working in biotechnology. One company made hollow fiber bioreactors to grow animal cells, and my first job there was to train scientists in Japan and the USA how to use them. I also worked in the Research & Development group to design new versions of these cell culture machines. Another job was at a large pharmaceutical company, where I did research on growing animal cells, yeast, and bacteria in many types of bioreactors to produce important medical products.
I started teaching English at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in April, 2006. Before that, I taught for 4 years at Ritsumeikan Keisho High School in Sapporo, and for 3½ years at the Asahi Culture Center in Sapporo. These two jobs gave me good experiences to learn what Japanese students know before and after they finish university. Besides teaching English, I have also helped many Japanese scientists with scientific proofreading and with making presentations at international meetings.
At Obihiro University, I will teach many courses in reading, listening, and writing skills, but I ask students to practice speaking English in all classes. I think it is very important for Japanese science majors to learn English because you will have a lot of contact with people who use English in the scientific world. With my background in science and teaching, I can help you. You have basic English abilities now, but I will help you to learn many skills so you can use those abilities in your careers. I hope I can show you interesting and fun ways to learn these skills.
