Ms. Pan Zhi-fei, a third-year student in the Doctoral Program in Animal and Food Hygiene of the Graduate School of Animal Husbandry, wins the WET Excellent Presentation Award of the Japan Society on Water Environment (WET 2018)

Ms. Zhi-fei Pan (China), a third-year student in the Doctoral Program in Animal and Food Hygiene of the Graduate School of Animal Husbandry, was awarded the WET Excellent Presentation Award by the Japan Society on Water Environment at the Water and Environment Technology Conference 2018 (WET 2018) held at Ehime University on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15. Her study was titled, “Effect of Anaerobic Digestion Temperature on the Survival of Pathogenic and Cefazolin-resistant Bacteria in Dairy Manure.”

Ms. Pan has studied the effectiveness of animal waste after anaerobic fermentation treatment as a measure to reduce the occurrence of pathogenic and chemical-resistant bacteria, which have emerged as new environmental issues. An investigation into anaerobic fermentation treatment of cow manure containing pathogenic and chemical-resistant bacteria was conducted at different temperatures. Results revealed that higher temperatures are more effective at killing bacteria such as Escherichia coli and cefazolin-resistant bacteria, and that an extended amount of processing time is necessary to kill Campylobacter capable of surviving for a long period of time during processing. This research was highly appreciated.

Ms. Pan expressed her wishes for the future, saying, “In the future, I will conduct further work on the plant growth promotion effect and safety by using the digestive fluid generated after the methane fermentation process as liquid fertilizer.”
