Graduate

 The Graduate School offers master's degree programs with specialization in various fields of agriculture and animal science, a doctoral program in Animal and Food Hygiene, and doctoral programs in collaboration with the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences, Gifu University and the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Iwate University. The curricular programs have been designed for students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills necessary in agro-biological research, zoonotic protozoan and microbial infectious diseases, and related fields.

Goals of the Graduate School

The goal of the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Graduate School is to train individuals who will have the ability to conduct advanced research with well-developed problem-solving skills and have comprehensive knowledge of agriculture and animal husbandry to promote food safety

Educational Policy for graduate school

Diploma policy

The degree shall be conferred on persons who:
1. Acquire knowledge and ethics related to food production and consumption from a comprehensive perspective of agriculture, animal science and veterinary science,
2. Strive to solve global issues in the fields of food and environmental science,
3. Acquire communication and presentation skill to explain his or her own ideas and
4. Acquire the skills required by an advanced specialist related to the specific subjects covered in the Graduate School curriculum.
<Master's Program in Life Science and Agriculture>
4-a   A person who understands livestock animals and their living environments by learning from a wide range of life science research areas.
4-b   A person who has acquired the skills and knowledge to be able to contribute to the fields of livestock science, environmental science and related fields.
<Master's Program in Food Science>
4-c   A person who has acquired the advanced knowledge and skills related to the processing and conversion of agricultural resources and their biological functions and safety.
4-d  A person who has acquired the advanced knowledge and skills to be able to contribute to the fields of food science and related industries.
<Master's Program in Agro-environmental Science>
4-e   A person who has acquired the advanced knowledge and skills related to the principles of food production, production technology, and environmental control, that are required to improve plant production and utilize local resources.
4-f   A person who has mastered the ability to solve food and environmental issues that affect local and international communities.
<Master's Program in Animal and Food Hygiene>
4-g   A person who has mastered the health management aspects of the production, processing, distribution and marketing of agricultural resources.
4-h   A person who has acquired the advanced knowledge and skills to contribute internationally to food safety.
<Doctoral Program in Animal and Food Hygiene>
5. A person who can conduct research and development at a high level in the fields of veterinary science, agricultural science by integrating all aspects of these fields.
6. A person who can summarize research results and publish papers at home and abroad.

Curriculum policy

On the basis of the diploma policy, the Graduate School curriculum is organized as follows:
1. "Major core subjects" are required in every program, and special subjects are available in every laboratory so that students may aquire advanced specialized knowledge,
2. In order to have a broad exposure to a variety of fields, a requirement for an advanced specialists, common liberal arts courses and subjects from a variety of laboratories are available,
3. To acquire advanced specialized knowledge and an understanding of the technology required to detect and resolve problems, advanced study of specific fields is offered,
4. The students are required to take "English Communication for Science" (in the Master's Program) or "Presentation Practice" (in the Doctoral Program) to improve their ability to write academic papers and do oral presentations in English,
5. In order to cultivate the ability to work in international situations, overseas fieldwork and internships are available and
6. In order to acquire an advanced specialty, the following subjects are offered in each program and laboratory.
<Master's Program in Life Science and Agriculture>
6-a   Based on the need to preserve the environment and promote animal welfare, important aspects of animal husbandry research and the international livestock industry, this program provides advanced knowledge and training related to basic and applied areas of animal physiology and the relationship between livestock animals and their surroundings and their roles as members of the natural environment (mammals, birds, insects, plants).
<Master's Program in Food Science>
6-b   The program provides a wide range of current information and new technologies, from the molecular level to the industrial level, related to the processing of agricultural resources and their biological functions and safety.
<Master's Program in Agro-environmental Science>
6-c   Based on the concepts of sustainable material circulation and the utilization of local resources of Tokachi, Hokkaido, a major food production area in Japan, this program provides advanced knowledge and skills related to quantitative and qualitative enhancements in plant production. The courses cover plant physiology, plant pathology, plant genetics and soil science, so the graduates can use their knowledge of agricultural machinery engineering, environmental engineering and biology, and agricultural economics and farm management to improve the production ewnvironment.
<Master's Program in Animal and Food Hygiene>
6-d  Focused on "farm to table", this program provides a comprehensive education related to reproductive hygiene management, infectious diseases, meat and milk production, and food hygiene.
6-e   This program provides bilingual education to develop students' communication and presentation skills in English so that they may play an active part in the international community.
<Doctoral Program in Animal and Food Hygiene>
7. The doctoral program provides the subjects that are necessary to raise the individual's research ability to an international level and give them the ability to present the findings in English in an international setting, by learning the most current research trends and issues in the field of animal and environmental health and food safety.

8.  The doctoral program provides education to participate in the international community of animal and food hygiene researchers, through the process of writing a doctoral thesis, which requires the setting of the research agenda, making the research plan, conducting the research, discussing the results, surveying relevant papers, and presenting and writing a paper in English.

Admission Policy

The Graduate School aims to train individual who can solve problems related to agriculture and animal husbandry, specifically food safety using a wide range of knowledge. We want students:
1.   Who are extremely interested in issues relating to food safety, with a desire to improve productivity, preserve the environment and tackle these issues from a comprehensive perspective by combining agriculture, animal science and veterinary science,
2. Who want to be highly specialized professionals, who can work in an international setting that deals with agriculture and animal husbandry problems,
3. Who has acquired basic knowledge and skills related to the specific subjects of a Master's Program and
4. Who wish to do intensive research on issues related to the program of the Graduate School.

4-a  Those who have a desire to acquire advanced knowledge, skills and research ability on livestock production and management, and to make social contributions through livestock and life sciences.
4-b  Those who have a desire to acquire broad knowledge, skills and research ability on conservation and management of agricultural and the natural environment, and to make social contributions through ecology and environmental science.
<Master's Program in Food Science>
4-c   Those who have a desire to acquire higher technologies in processes and conversion of agricultural resources.
4-d  Those who have a desire to accumulate knowledge on the biological functions of food constituents.
<Master's Program in Agro-environmental Science>
4-e   Those who have a desire to investigate the latest knowledge on production and improvement of cultivated plants as well as soil and microorganisms.
4-f   Those who have enthusiasm in improving environmentally-friendly production techniques and conserving the local environment through the use of their engineering backgrounds.
4-g   Those who have a desire to cultivate knowledge on agricultural economics and business administration with regard to food production, and to make contributions to society.
<Master's Program in Animal and Food Hygiene>
4-h   Those who have a desire to acquire advanced knowledge and skills on livestock health, sanitary control for breeding, infectious diseases, meat production, and zoonotic protozoiasis.
4-i    Those who aim to acquire comprehensive knowledge of food hygiene and to make a contribution to society.
4-j    Those who have a desire to make a contribution to the development of efficient recycling-oriented agricultural and livestock production systems and to advance the control of diseases transmitted by vectors.

4-k   Those who are interested in food safety issues.
4-l    Those who have the desire to be internationally-minded and to play an active role in international exchanges.
4-m  Those who have experience in the field, but wish to improve their basic and practical skills.
